I guess if you are using iron dust you would get flakes but if you used something really solid like a cast iron pan to put the wool in then the parts that touch the pan would rust stain, and you could keep shifting it around. Alternatively you could…

Although in the past I have used lichens,barks, leaves etc. At present I am playing with rust dyeing. I find using tannin powder with the rust gives some lovely shades ranging from mushroom to blue/black
