Very quiet here. I will assume that everybody is off rusting some object or rust dyeing some fabric.
I'm Bea. I am a mixed media, fiber artist who has been thinking a lot about rusting things lately. I found this site and am happy to be here.
I have a blog, I know, who doesn't. BUT, if you want to see what's going on in my part of the world when I'm not here you can visit me at: http://dog-in-the-hole-studio.blogspot.com//

Hi Angella - I don't have any rocks like that in my neck of the woods, the colors on your rocks are beautiful! Wish I had a pile of those just for photographing. Where these in a river? I'd imagine that you will get some markings from the rocks esp.,if you rough up the surface on the rocks first to expose the iron oxide. Try it and let us know how it goes I'm curious as to how it'll work.

hi all.
so, question for anyone- i live in an area where there is an ample supply of iron oxide rocks, right on the ground near the edge of a lake. i plan on experimenting doing a bit of eco-dyeing with them, using a felted wool scarf and "bundling" the wool around each stone before steaming. has anyone else ever played with these fabulous stones?

I have one of those things! Any idea what they were used for on the tracks??? I haven't used mine yet it's part of my still life collection for drawing.

I'm lucky enough (in a sense :}) to live near an industrial park and trains maintenance yard---i walk along the tracks and find oodles of cool bits to use.
These were my latest find:

Tip: You can rust papers, tyvek, and wood right along with the fabric. Try this on your next rusting day!!!

I guess if you are using iron dust you would get flakes but if you used something really solid like a cast iron pan to put the wool in then the parts that touch the pan would rust stain, and you could keep shifting it around. Alternatively you could make some rust liquor, strain it and soak the wool in that
Just some thoughts. Cheers Deryn

Hi,

I just discovered rust dyeing and I think it's fantastic. I'm sure I have something rusty around here somewhere. ;-j

I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone is doing and giving it a try. 8-]

I do weaving and spinning and some natural dyeing. I'm wondering it it's possible to rust dye handspun yarn without getting little flecks caught in the fibers?

I used Lutradur recently. I didn't flow through the printer well. I had to cellotape it to an A4 sheet and it worked then. The print was faint on a white sheet, but readable when I put iron-on muslin on the back. I then ran it carefully through a gatherer and turned it into a fan with a message. Haven't done anything else with it since.
