I bet if you combine the earth with the beige of the mushrooms you will get slpendid colours - did you already have tried to contactdye them?

My experience ( and what I've read) is that you can dye with all....if all you want is a mushroom/beige colour !!!! To get yellows, browns, pink/red/orange...you need specific ones, which don't always grow in the area/country available !!! eg I am in the Perth area in Western Australia, and although we have a few growing ,it is not really damp enough, whereas a few hours drive South there is more variety but still a small harvest time....not really viable. We should concentrate on dye with earth I think...plenty of that here !!!!!

A great book to reference for mushroom dyeing is A Rainbow beneath my feet, also any book written by Miram Rice.

In October '09 I will be in France - don't know what to find there in the wild, but I have seen many on the market. Can you dye with every mushroom, although they are not for conusmption and toxic?

What a great idea...where do you get the wood ????

Interesting all the experiments here...I bought pieces of wood specially treated to let grow mushroom...harvesting here in the wild is forbidden ( the Netherlands) so waiting for my mushrooms to grow!
